The multinational naval exercise “Cyprus Arrow 2026” was conducted on 17 August in the maritime area south of Limassol, bringing together naval units from Cyprus, Greece, the United States, Italy and Germany as part of efforts to strengthen operational cooperation and interoperability among partner nations.

The exercise involved the Cyprus National Guard Naval Command’s offshore patrol vessel IOANNIDIS, the Hellenic Navy frigate NIKIFOROS FOKAS, the US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS PAUL IGNATIUS, the Italian Navy frigate CARABINIERE and the German Navy frigate BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG.

The participation of five naval forces provided an opportunity to train in a multinational maritime environment and further develop common procedures for cooperation, coordination and communications between participating surface units.

During the exercise, the ships conducted a series of tactical manoeuvres, advanced formations, technical drills and communications exercises, testing the ability of the participating crews and command elements to operate effectively together at sea.

Particular emphasis was placed on coordination between the different naval units and on strengthening interoperability through the implementation of common operational procedures. Such training provides participating forces with valuable experience in multinational naval operations while improving their ability to communicate and coordinate during combined maritime activities.

The presence of naval assets from Cyprus, Greece, the United States, Italy and Germany also highlighted the increasingly multinational character of maritime security cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, where allied and partner navies regularly conduct joint training and exercises.

For the Cyprus National Guard, Cyprus Arrow 2026 forms part of its wider programme of bilateral and multinational military cooperation with friendly countries. These activities are aimed at enhancing operational readiness, exchanging experience and strengthening the National Guard’s ability to operate alongside partner armed forces in complex multinational environments.

The exercise was conducted in the presence of the senior leadership of the Cyprus National Guard and demonstrated the continuing emphasis placed on international defence cooperation and naval interoperability.
