Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is integrating its SPICE 1000 precision-guided air-to-surface munition on the F-35 fighter aircraft for the first time. The programme represents an important milestone for the Israeli-developed weapon and could eventually enable other countries operating the F-35 to add the SPICE 1000 to their strike inventories.

Designed to engage fixed and high-value targets, the SPICE 1000 offers a stand-off range exceeding 120 kilometres. This allows the launching aircraft to attack targets from considerable distance, potentially reducing its exposure to hostile air-defence systems and other battlefield threats.

The munition is equipped with an advanced electro-optical seeker and employs sophisticated scene-matching algorithms during the terminal phase of its flight. By comparing the terrain and target area with previously stored reference imagery, the guidance system can identify and home in on the designated target with high accuracy. This capability is especially valuable in modern operational environments where satellite-navigation signals may be disrupted, degraded or denied.

SPICE 1000 has already been acquired by several countries and is operationally deployed by a number of air forces worldwide. It has also served as one of the Israeli Air Force’s principal precision-strike weapons for several years. The munition has reportedly been used extensively during recent long-range operations, launched from Israeli F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft.

Its integration on the F-35 is being undertaken as a joint project between Rafael and Lockheed Martin. The work is being conducted at Lockheed Martin facilities in the United States and is expected to be completed within the coming months. Following the successful conclusion of the integration and certification process, SPICE 1000 will initially be cleared for operational employment from Israeli F-35 aircraft.

At a later stage, the integration could make the munition available to other F-35 operators, subject to the necessary national approvals, certification procedures and procurement decisions. Such a development would expand the selection of precision-guided stand-off weapons available to the international F-35 community and strengthen Rafael’s position in the global combat-aircraft weapons market.

The programme also combines Rafael’s experience in precision-guided weapons with Lockheed Martin’s expertise as the manufacturer and prime contractor of the F-35. Integrating an additional weapon onto the aircraft requires extensive technical work to ensure compatibility with its avionics, mission systems, software and operating procedures.

SPICE 1000 belongs to Rafael’s wider SPICE family of precision-guided air-to-surface munitions. The family consists of weapons in three weight classes and provides engagement ranges of up to 120 kilometres, depending on the specific configuration. Developed by Rafael and recognised with the Israel Defense Prize, the SPICE family was designed to provide accurate, autonomous and resilient strike capabilities against strategically important targets.

The planned clearance of SPICE 1000 for the Israeli F-35 will therefore mark both an operational enhancement for the aircraft and a significant new stage in the international development of Rafael’s precision-strike portfolio.
