The Republic of Cyprus is continuing to strengthen its aerial firefighting capabilities with the delivery of its second Air Tractor AT-802 aircraft, as part of a programme for the procurement of three new firefighting aircraft.

According to an announcement by the Cyprus Ministry of Defence, the second Air Tractor AT-802 was delivered on 29 July 2026 and is owned by the Republic of Cyprus. The acquisition is being carried out under a contract covering the procurement of three firefighting aircraft, with the aim of further strengthening the national fleet and enhancing the Republic’s operational capabilities in combating wildfires.

The reinforcement of Cyprus’ aerial firefighting assets is particularly important given the high temperatures and prolonged periods of dry weather experienced during the summer months, which significantly increase the risk of forest and rural fires and their rapid spread. The ability to intervene rapidly from the air can prove crucial, particularly during the initial stages of a wildfire.

The Air Tractor AT-802 is widely used internationally for aerial firefighting missions and is designed to operate effectively under demanding conditions. Its operational flexibility and ability to conduct repeated drops within relatively short periods make it an important asset in supporting firefighting teams operating on the ground.

With the delivery of the second aircraft, the Republic of Cyprus has taken another important step towards establishing a stronger and more autonomous aerial firefighting capability. The completion of the programme with the delivery of the third aircraft is expected to further increase the availability of aerial assets and enhance the country’s ability to respond simultaneously to fire incidents in different areas.

At the same time, the acquisition of state-owned aircraft provides Cyprus with greater scope for long-term operational planning and strengthens the ability of the competent authorities to respond rapidly to emergency situations, reducing dependence on external assistance or temporarily available firefighting assets.

As highlighted by the Ministry of Defence, the latest delivery forms part of the broader plan to further strengthen the fleet and upgrade the Republic’s operational capabilities, with the primary objective of improving wildfire prevention and response while limiting the spread and potential impact of fires.

The Ministry of Defence also emphasised that it remains committed to the strategic objective of strengthening the assets and capabilities available to the Republic of Cyprus. Investment in modern firefighting capabilities is expected to make an important contribution to protecting the population, the natural environment and the country’s critical infrastructure.
