Greece–UK Defence Talks Highlight Eastern Mediterranean Stability

The Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, met with UK Defence Secretary John Healey at the Ministry of Defence in London, focusing on regional security and bilateral cooperation amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The discussions centered on the need for stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as developments in Iran, the Middle East, Lebanon, and Ukraine. Both sides acknowledged the growing complexity of security challenges and the importance of coordinated responses.

Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening defence cooperation between Greece and the United Kingdom, especially in innovation, emerging technologies, and unmanned systems under Greece’s “Agenda 2030” framework.

Minister Dendias highlighted the strategic importance of Cyprus and Greece’s role in supporting regional security, including contributions to NATO and EU partners such as Bulgaria. He described the current geopolitical environment as one of the most unstable periods since World War II.

Maritime security and the protection of sea lines of communication were also key topics, reflecting the shared interests of both nations as major maritime powers.

Responding to questions, Dendias ruled out the possibility of deploying a Greek naval vessel to the Strait of Hormuz under current conditions.

During his visit, he also met with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell to discuss broader geopolitical developments.
