The French Navy’s first Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention (FDI), Amiral Ronarc’h, has successfully completed an extensive long-duration deployment designed to validate the vessel’s operational performance under demanding real-world conditions, marking a major milestone before its entry into active service.

As the lead ship of France’s new FDI frigate class, Amiral Ronarc’h undertook a comprehensive deployment that evaluated the endurance of its propulsion, combat and mission systems, the reliability of onboard equipment, and the ship’s ability to sustain prolonged operations while conducting first-line maintenance at sea. The programme also assessed crew readiness and the vessel’s capability to operate independently across a broad range of operational environments.

The deployment exposed the frigate to widely differing climatic conditions. Initial operations were conducted in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, where near-freezing temperatures tested anti-icing systems, exposed equipment and critical onboard infrastructure. The ship subsequently operated in the South Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, where temperatures exceeding 36°C placed significant demands on cooling systems, combat electronics and onboard data centres.

The trials demonstrated the FDI’s ability to operate across the full spectrum of climatic conditions likely to be encountered during global deployments, reflecting the French Navy’s requirement for a multi-mission combatant capable of supporting operations throughout France’s worldwide maritime areas of responsibility.

Operational interoperability also formed a key element of the deployment. During the ORION exercise, Amiral Ronarc’h operated alongside the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, FREMM multi-mission frigates and other naval assets, demonstrating its ability to exchange tactical information in real time and generate a comprehensive recognised maritime picture covering air, surface and subsurface threats.

The frigate also successfully conducted replenishment-at-sea operations with the French Navy’s new BRF (Bâtiments Ravitailleurs de Forces) fleet replenishment vessels, including the transfer of missiles while underway, validating the logistical support concept for sustained naval operations.

Throughout the deployment, Naval Group maintained close technical support to both the ship and its crew. Dedicated engineering teams coordinated technical assistance, managed spare-parts logistics and provided rapid responses to operational issues, while specialists from several Naval Group sites supported propulsion systems, the combat management system and the ship’s platform throughout the trials.

As the first ship of its class, Amiral Ronarc’h is expected to provide valuable operational feedback that will support the optimisation and maturation of the four additional FDI frigates currently under construction for the French Navy.

A scheduled maintenance and final technical availability period in Brest between September and December 2026 will conclude the vessel’s warranty phase and prepare the frigate for formal acceptance into active naval service. Once commissioned, Amiral Ronarc’h will become the first operational representative of France’s new-generation FDI class, providing the French Navy with advanced multi-mission capabilities for high-intensity naval operations.
