US Approves $101 Million Aircraft Repair and Support Package for Greece
The United States has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Greece valued at an estimated $101 million for aircraft repair, sustainment and return support, reinforcing Athens’ ability to maintain the operational availability of its aircraft fleet. The U.S. Department of State announced on 23 September 2026 that it had made the determination approving the potential sale to the Government of Greece, which includes aircraft components, spare parts and a range of engineering, technical and logistics support services.
According to the notification, the Greek Government has requested the purchase of aircraft components, parts and accessories, together with spare parts, consumables and accessories. The package also includes repair and return support, as well as U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services and other related elements of logistics and programme support. The proposed package is therefore focused primarily on sustaining existing aircraft capabilities and supporting fleet availability rather than the procurement of new aircraft.
The U.S. Department of State said the proposed sale would support American foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the security of Greece, which it described as a NATO Ally that continues to contribute to political and economic stability in Europe. According to the U.S. assessment, the package will improve Greece’s ability to sustain its aircraft fleet, enabling the country to respond to modern threats while maintaining a continuous operational presence in the region. Washington also stated that Greece would have no difficulty integrating the proposed articles and services into its armed forces.
The notification further states that the proposed sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region. Unlike major Foreign Military Sales involving a specific weapons platform or system supplied by a designated manufacturer, a principal contractor has not yet been identified for this package. The contractor will instead be determined through an off-the-shelf marketplace process, a request for proposal or another appropriate contracting mechanism designed to secure the best available capabilities at the time of contracting. Any potential offset agreement would subsequently be determined through negotiations between Greece and the selected contractor.
Implementation of the proposed sale will not require the assignment of additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Greece. The Department of State also stated that the transaction would have no adverse impact on U.S. defence readiness.
The proposed $101 million package underlines the continuing importance of sustainment, maintenance and logistical support in maintaining the readiness of modern military aviation fleets. For Greece, which operates a broad range of aircraft requiring continuous maintenance and access to components and technical support, the package is intended to strengthen the ability of the Hellenic Armed Forces to maintain aircraft availability and operational capability.
The approval represents another element of the long-standing defence relationship between Greece and the United States within the NATO framework. The transaction remains a possible Foreign Military Sale, with the announced $101 million representing the estimated total value of the proposed package.
