U.S. Donates C-130H Hercules Aircraft to Botswana

The United States has officially donated an additional C-130H Hercules tactical airlift aircraft to the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), reinforcing the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries and significantly enhancing Botswana’s strategic air mobility capabilities.

The donation follows an announcement made during the February 2025 visit to Botswana by Kelli L. Seybolt, U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, who confirmed that Botswana had been selected to receive the aircraft as part of ongoing U.S. security cooperation efforts. The transfer was officially confirmed last week, marking another important milestone in decades of military collaboration between Gaborone and Washington.

The addition of a second C-130H Hercules will substantially improve the Botswana Defence Force’s ability to conduct strategic and tactical airlift operations, support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, transport personnel and equipment, and respond rapidly to national emergencies. The aircraft will also strengthen Botswana’s contribution to regional peacekeeping, humanitarian and security operations across Southern Africa.

Renowned for its reliability and versatility, the Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules is one of the world’s most successful military transport aircraft. Capable of operating from short and semi-prepared runways, it can transport troops, vehicles, cargo, medical evacuation teams and humanitarian supplies in a wide range of operational environments. Its proven performance has made it a vital asset for air forces around the world for more than six decades.

The donation reflects the United States’ continued commitment to strengthening the capabilities of African partner nations through defence cooperation, military assistance and capacity-building initiatives. The U.S. has maintained a close security relationship with Botswana for many years, supporting military training, professional education, humanitarian assistance and joint exercises aimed at enhancing regional stability and interoperability.

For Botswana, the new aircraft represents a significant enhancement of its air transport fleet, increasing operational flexibility and improving readiness for both military and civilian support missions. The C-130H will play an important role in sustaining national defence capabilities while enabling the Botswana Defence Force to respond more effectively to natural disasters, humanitarian crises and regional security challenges.

The transfer further underscores the strong and enduring defence relationship between Botswana and the United States, highlighting their shared commitment to promoting peace, security and stability across the African continent.
