Greece Deploys Naval and Air Assets to Support Cyprus Amid Rising Tensions
Greece has announced the immediate deployment of naval and air assets to Cyprus following what Athens described as unprovoked attacks on Cypriot territory, signalling a strong escalation in defence coordination between the two countries.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that the decision followed high-level political and military consultations, including a phone call between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. Athens, he said, will support Cyprus “for the entire duration of the current crisis,” contributing by every available means to its defence.
Under a decision by Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA), the Hellenic Navy frigate Kimon will be dispatched to Cyprus, accompanied by a second frigate equipped with the CENTAURUS electronic warfare and counter-drone system. In parallel, a pair of Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighter jets will be deployed to strengthen Cypriot air defence.
Dendias also announced that he will travel to Cyprus alongside the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff to coordinate operational and political actions with Cypriot officials, including Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.
The deployment highlights Greece’s intent to reinforce deterrence and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean amid growing regional volatility.
