The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has taken another significant step in modernising its air capabilities with the commissioning of a new LET L-410 transport aircraft, officially inducted into service by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The ceremony marks an important milestone in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to enhance the operational readiness, mobility and versatility of the UPDF Air Force. The newly commissioned aircraft is expected to play a key role in supporting military logistics, humanitarian operations and emergency response missions, while significantly improving the force’s ability to rapidly deploy personnel and equipment across the country and the wider region.

The LET L-410, a twin-engine utility aircraft manufactured in the Czech Republic, is renowned for its ability to operate from short and unprepared airstrips, making it particularly well suited for operations in challenging environments. Designed as a true multi-role platform, the aircraft can be configured for a wide range of missions, including tactical transport, cargo delivery, medical evacuation, airborne operations and VIP transportation.

According to the UPDF, the aircraft can accommodate 19 passengers in its standard transport configuration, serve as an air ambulance carrying up to six stretcher patients and three seated medical patients, operate as a VIP transport for up to eight passengers, transport military cargo, or be configured for paratrooper deployment, providing the Air Force with considerable operational flexibility.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Commander Air Force Lieutenant General Charles Okidi, the Chief of Staff Air Force, and a delegation from Czech defence company OMNIPOL, led by Chairman Ondrej Panenka, together with Mr. Valentin και Mr. Humphrey Nzeyi.

During the event, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba emphasised the importance of maintaining the newly acquired aircraft to the highest operational standards in order to maximise their service life and mission effectiveness. He also expressed appreciation to OMNIPOL for successfully facilitating the acquisition programme, noting that the aircraft had been delivered two months ahead of schedule, reflecting the strong cooperation between Uganda and its international defence partners.

The introduction of the LET L-410 further strengthens the UPDF Air Force’s ability to conduct troop transport, logistical resupply, casualty evacuation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, while supporting national security requirements and regional peace support missions.

The commissioning underscores Uganda’s continued investment in modernising its armed forces and enhancing national air mobility capabilities. It also reflects the country’s commitment to maintaining a capable, flexible and responsive air force able to address emerging security challenges while contributing to regional stability through cooperation with international defence partners.
