Cyprus and Greece Strengthen Defence Coordination Amid Regional Escalation

Cyprus and Greece have reaffirmed their close defence cooperation following a meeting in Nicosia between Cyprus’ Minister of Defence and Greece’s Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias. The meeting took place against the backdrop of rapidly evolving developments in the Middle East and growing security concerns in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Welcoming his Greek counterpart to the Ministry of Defence, the Cypriot minister described Greece as Cyprus’ most important partner and strongest supporter in matters of national security. The two defence ministries, he noted, maintain extremely close coordination and remain in continuous consultation on security and defence issues affecting the region.

The Cypriot government also expressed gratitude to Athens for the deployment of two Greek frigates and four F-16 fighter aircraft, which have been sent to reinforce Cyprus’ defence posture in response to the current security environment.

During the meeting, the Cypriot minister briefed Dendias on the latest developments related to national security. Particular attention was given to incidents that occurred the previous day involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to the briefing, a drone attack took place within the military installations of the British Sovereign Base Areas at Akrotiri, while other UAVs heading toward the bases were detected and intercepted in time.

Despite the escalating regional tensions, the Cypriot government reiterated its firm position that the Republic of Cyprus has not participated, is not participating, and will not become part of any military operation related to the ongoing crisis.

Nicosia emphasized that its defence and security policy continues to be guided by respect for international law, the strengthening of strategic partnerships, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

At the same time, Cyprus highlighted its ongoing humanitarian role in the region, noting that it has provided assistance and support to those in need and contributed to initiatives aimed at protecting civilians during the crisis.

Cyprus, the minister concluded, will continue to act responsibly and remain committed to safeguarding national security while promoting stability, cooperation, and peace in the wider region, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner within the international community.
