Investment will create 300 new jobs, modernise military vehicle production and strengthen ELVO\u2019s capabilities in advanced defence systems and technologies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ELVO \u2013 Hellenic Vehicle Industries, Greece\u2019s foremost manufacturer of specialised military and civilian vehicles, is investing \u20ac40 million to expand and modernise its defence manufacturing capabilities while creating approximately 300 new jobs at its Sindos facility. The investment will strengthen ELVO\u2019s existing military vehicle production while expanding the company\u2019s capabilities to manufacture additional defence systems and conduct research and development. It will also incorporate SK Group\u2019s know-how and technologies into ELVO\u2019s systems portfolio, including Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and counter-drone systems. The programme will modernise and increase ELVO\u2019s core military vehicle production capacity while establishing new capabilities in emerging defence technologies. These investments will enable ELVO to meet the operational requirements of the Hellenic market, pursue growing export opportunities across international defence markets and become a major defence technology hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key impact of the investment will be its contribution to employment and economic development in Northern Greece. ELVO has already begun recruiting for new positions, with approximately 300 new jobs expected to be created at its Sindos facility across specialised engineering, technical manufacturing and operational roles. Beyond direct employment, the expansion is expected to strengthen the broader regional business ecosystem by creating opportunities for regional industrial partners and service providers, generating supply-chain synergies and supporting additional indirect economic activity throughout the region. The \u20ac40 million investment builds on the momentum created since ELVO\u2019s acquisition by SK Group, which has already invested more than \u20ac20 million to restructure the company, upgrade its facilities and streamline production workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implementation is already underway, with the projects being carried out in phases across ELVO\u2019s industrial complex in Sindos. The investment will transform ELVO into a defence technology hub for Southern Europe, combining expanded military vehicle production with new capabilities in unmanned and autonomous systems while creating significant employment opportunities and supporting economic growth in the region. \u201cWe believe that Greece has the talent, industrial foundation and strategic position to become a leading force in the next generation of European defence manufacturing, and our commitment to ELVO reflects our long-term vision for Greece\u2014investing in its people, its industrial capabilities and its future,\u201d said ELVO General Manager Antonis Vitetzakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of SK Group, ELVO brings proven experience in sophisticated defence systems manufacturing and R&D, including the complex transfer and implementation of technologies and know-how. Its capabilities extend beyond subcontracting or component manufacturing to integrating and producing complete defence systems, as well as successfully implementing new technologies. In the defence sector, where quality, consistency and technical expertise are essential, this experience provides a strong foundation for ELVO\u2019s continued expansion into advanced defence manufacturing and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, ELVO continues the upgrade of military vehicles for the Hellenic Army, demonstrating a new approach to fleet modernisation with the first modernised Mercedes G-Class vehicles. The ongoing programme aims to transform the Hellenic Army\u2019s 30-year-old vehicles into modern combat assets. This model demonstrates how armed forces can introduce modern capabilities without replacing an entire fleet, using advanced technology and engineering to extend the operational life of existing vehicles while maximising the value of investments already made. By retaining vehicles based on proven platforms and upgrading them with modern systems, protection, mobility and functionality, militaries can pursue a more cost-efficient approach to fleet modernisation while maintaining operational continuity. ELVO\u2019s approach combines the foundation of an existing vehicle with modern propulsion, situational-awareness, communications and operator-support technologies. The model reflects an evolving approach to military vehicle modernisation, enabling existing fleets to be continuously upgraded as technology and battlefield requirements change rather than being replaced wholesale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the kind of innovation that strengthens military capability, extends the value of existing assets and positions ELVO at the forefront of next-generation vehicle solutions.\u201d ELVO previously supplied more than 10,000 Mercedes 290GD and Mercedes 240 vehicles and over 12,000 Steyr trucks, as well as armoured vehicles such as the LEOPARD tank and LEONIDAS, to Greece and Cyprus. This gives the company decades of first-hand knowledge of the vehicles, their designs and their operational requirements, providing ELVO with a unique foundation for modernising similar fleets operated by armed forces worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modernisation involves a comprehensive transformation of the vehicles to meet current operational requirements. This includes a new engine and automatic transmission to improve performance and ease of operation, together with electric air conditioning and a completely redesigned interior featuring ergonomic, adjustable seats with suspension and armrests. Additional improvements include an integrated intercom system, USB ports and mobile-phone connectivity, cup holders and compact refrigerators. The vehicles also receive significantly enhanced situational awareness and visibility, including 360-degree camera systems providing day-and-night views around the vehicle. All existing vehicle lighting is replaced with LED systems, supplemented by additional exterior lighting to improve visibility during operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protection has also been upgraded to address current threats to military vehicles. The modernised vehicles feature anti-drone protection nets, thermal and visual camouflage, anti-riot protection for the windscreens and unbreakable mirrors. The vehicles are produced in accordance with MIL-STD requirements and can also be configured to accommodate weapon systems, providing additional flexibility for different mission requirements. The solution is fully manufactured in Greece using Greek technology, engineering expertise, skilled personnel and ELVO\u2019s domestic manufacturing facilities. Through its industrial activity and technical expertise, ELVO is helping to transform Thessaloniki and the surrounding region into a defence technology hub for Southern Europe, creating a base for producing advanced vehicle-modernisation solutions for Greece and international markets. This modernisation model points to a new approach to military vehicle fleets, in which upgrades become an ongoing process rather than a one-time replacement. For armed forces managing large vehicle inventories, this provides a way to introduce new capabilities as technology and battlefield requirements evolve while extending the service life and value of vehicles already in operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
