The United States Congress has allowed the proposed sale of General Electric F110 fighter engines to Turkey to proceed after lawmakers failed to advance a resolution aimed at blocking the transaction during the statutory congressional review period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. State Department formally notified Congress of the proposed Foreign Military Sale on 24 June, triggering the 15-day review period that applies to NATO allies. During this time, a joint resolution of disapproval was introduced by Representative Dina Titus and supported by several lawmakers who have previously opposed major U.S. defence sales to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the resolution did not advance to a vote in either the House of Representatives or the Senate before the review period expired on 9 July. As a result, Congress did not prevent the proposed transaction from moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Turkish media reports, including Hurriyet<\/em> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 Yeni \u015eafak<\/em>, the expiration of the review period effectively clears the way for the next phase of the process, which includes detailed technical and commercial negotiations between the Turkish authorities, the U.S. government and General Electric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The proposed sale concerns the F110-GE-129E\/F turbofan engines, which are expected to power the initial production batches of Turkey’s indigenous KAAN fifth-generation fighter aircraft. While Turkey continues developing its domestically produced TF35000 engine, the F110 will provide the propulsion solution required for flight testing and early serial production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under U.S. law, major defence exports are subject to congressional review following formal notification by the State Department. For NATO allies, Congress has 15 days to consider a joint resolution of disapproval. Such a resolution must pass both chambers of Congress and be signed by the President to prevent the transaction from proceeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With no successful legislative action taken before the review period expired, the proposed engine sale now advances to the implementation stage.
