HS Formion (F-603)<\/strong>, the third FDI HN (Fr\u00e9gate de D\u00e9fense et d’Intervention Hellenic Navy)<\/strong> frigate being built by Naval Group for the Hellenic Navy, has successfully commenced her first sea trials off the coast of Lorient, France<\/strong>. The milestone marks another significant step in Greece’s ambitious naval modernization programme and the strengthening of its maritime capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sea trials are designed to validate the frigate’s propulsion, navigation, combat systems, sensors, communications, and overall platform performance under operational conditions before final delivery to the Hellenic Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HS Formion follows HS Kimon<\/strong>, which has already completed extensive sea trials, and HS Nearchos<\/strong>, which continues its outfitting and testing phase. Together, the three advanced FDI frigates will form the backbone of the Hellenic Navy’s future surface fleet, providing significantly enhanced air defence, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and network-centric operational capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FDI HN incorporates state-of-the-art technologies, including the Thales Sea Fire fully digital AESA radar<\/strong>, advanced electronic warfare systems, an integrated combat management system, and the capability to employ Aster 30 surface-to-air missiles<\/strong>, Exocet MM40 Block 3C anti-ship missiles<\/strong>, MU90 lightweight torpedoes<\/strong>, and a 76 mm Leonardo naval gun<\/strong>. The frigate is also equipped to operate the MH-60R Seahawk<\/strong> helicopter, further expanding its anti-submarine and maritime surveillance capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start of sea trials for HS Formion demonstrates the continued progress of the FDI HN programme and reflects the close defence-industrial cooperation between Greece and France. Once delivered, the three frigates will considerably enhance the Hellenic Navy’s operational readiness, deterrence, and ability to contribute to NATO and European maritime security missions across the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful commencement of sea trials represents another important milestone toward the delivery of one of the most technologically advanced warship classes ever acquired by the Hellenic Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
