In a significant move to bolster Greece’s maritime defense\u00a0 and humanitarian efforts, Prime Minister Kyriakos\u00a0 Mitsotakis addressed an official ceremony on September\u00a0 2, 2025, marking the reception and integration of five high speed patrol boats into the Hellenic Coast Guard fleet.\u00a0 Speaking alongside key government officials, naval\u00a0 leadership, and local authorities, Mitsotakis underscored\u00a0 the strategic and symbolic importance of the new vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Equipped with ballistic\u00a0 protection, remote-controlled weaponry, and advanced\u00a0 medical and rescue capabilities, they offer a dual-function\u00a0 approach to maritime security. Mitsotakis emphasized this\u00a0 as central to Greece\u2019s comprehensive migration strategy,\u00a0 which balances the protection of national sovereignty with\u00a0 respect for human dignity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Addressing criticism aimed at the Coast Guard, Mitsotakis\u00a0 took a firm stance in support of those serving on the front\u00a0 lines. \u201cLet us shut our ears to the irresponsible voices\u00a0 who, from the comfort of their living rooms, slander those\u00a0 who brave the sea in service to their country,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cYour actions, your presence, speak louder than any\u00a0 accusation. The Prime Minister highlighted measurable progress in\u00a0 managing migration flows. Between January and August\u00a0 2025, total illegal arrivals dropped by 7.2% compared to\u00a0 the same period in 2024, with some Eastern Aegean\u00a0 islands experiencing reductions of over 42%. While initial\u00a0 surges were observed from Libya, a temporary\u00a0 suspension of asylum procedures helped reverse the\u00a0 trend. Mitsotakis noted that in August, Crete saw as many\u00a0 arrivals in a month as it did in a single day during July\u2014a\u00a0 dramatic shift credited to enhanced surveillance and\u00a0 deterrence capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The procurement of these new vessels follows\u00a0 specifications tailored by Greek experts to address the\u00a0 unique geographical and operational challenges of the\u00a0 Aegean. Mitsotakis expressed hope that future defense\u00a0 programs will include increased participation from Greek\u00a0 shipyards, which have been revitalized under recent\u00a0 government initiatives \u201cThese vessels are not only built for the Greek seas\u2014they are built by Greek minds and\u00a0 hands.
