METLEN Inaugurates Fourth Production Unit of M Technologies Hub, Strengthening Greece’s Defence Industrial Base

METLEN has officially inaugurated the fourth production unit of its M Technologies Hub in Volos, marking a major milestone in the development of Greece’s defence industry and reinforcing the country’s position within Europe’s evolving defence industrial landscape.

The new facility is the fourth of six production units that will comprise the fully integrated defence manufacturing complex. Once completed, the Hub will span 100,000 square metres, forming Greece’s largest vertically integrated defence industrial ecosystem with capabilities ranging from raw material processing and advanced manufacturing to assembly, integration, and lifecycle support for sophisticated defence systems.

The inauguration was attended by members of the Greek Government, senior military officials, and executives from leading international defence companies, underscoring the strategic importance of the investment for both Greece and Europe.

METLEN Executive Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos described the project as far more than the opening of another industrial facility, calling it a key component of a defence industrial ecosystem designed to support Greece’s national security while contributing to Europe’s strategic autonomy. He emphasized that the rapidly evolving geopolitical environment requires nations to strengthen domestic industrial capabilities and reduce dependence on external suppliers.

Representing the Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias highlighted the Hub’s contribution to expanding Greece’s defence industrial base and increasing domestic value creation. He stressed that investments in national production capacity, advanced technology, skilled employment, and exports ensure that defence spending delivers long-term benefits for the Greek economy while strengthening national resilience.

Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos noted that the €45 million investment, designated as a Strategic Investment of Exceptional Importance, demonstrates the government’s commitment to accelerating industrial development and regional growth. The project received approval in late 2024 and has progressed from planning to full-scale production in less than two years.

The start of full production at the fourth facility also confirms the rapid implementation of METLEN’s defence expansion strategy first presented during the company’s Capital Markets Day in London in April 2025. The investment significantly expands the company’s manufacturing capacity while strengthening Greece’s role within European defence supply chains.

Through its defence division, M Technologies, METLEN already cooperates with major international defence companies including KNDS, Naval Group, TKMS, and Raytheon, while actively pursuing participation in additional European collaborative defence programmes.

According to M Technologies Chief Executive Director Vasilis Tsiamis, increasing demand across Europe for reliable defence manufacturing capacity creates significant opportunities for the Volos Hub to support multiple complex international programmes through advanced production capabilities and strategic industrial partnerships.

The Volos complex currently employs approximately 500 highly skilled personnel, with employment expected to grow to around 1,000 direct and indirect high-value jobs upon full completion. Beyond employment, the investment is expected to boost the regional economy through technology transfer, workforce development, local supplier participation, and the retention of highly qualified engineers and technicians.

Strategically located with access to port facilities, rail links, highways, and an airport, the M Technologies Hub is expected to become one of Southeastern Europe’s most important defence manufacturing and support centres. The investment further strengthens Greece’s industrial competitiveness while supporting European defence resilience, strategic autonomy, and the development of a modern, export-oriented defence industrial base.
