The German Bundestag’s Budget Committee has approved the procurement of four MEKO® A-200 DEU-class frigates for the German Navy, paving the way for the formal signing of what TKMS describes as the largest surface vessel contract in the company’s history. The programme also includes an option for the procurement of additional vessels.

The decision represents a major step in Germany’s efforts to accelerate the modernization and expansion of its naval capabilities amid growing security requirements in Europe and NATO’s maritime areas of responsibility.

According to TKMS, the first MEKO® A-200 DEU frigate is scheduled to be delivered to the German Navy as early as 2029. The relatively ambitious delivery schedule reflects Germany’s requirement to rapidly strengthen the operational capabilities of its fleet.

“We welcome today’s approval by the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee of the procurement of four MEKO® A-200 DEU-class frigates, as well as the option outlined in the resolution to procure additional MEKO® A-200 DEU vessels,” said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS.

Burkhard emphasized the importance of delivering the vessels rapidly, noting that the current security environment places particular pressure on the German defence industry and its industrial partners.

“We are aware of our responsibility to build these ships very quickly due to the security situation, as stipulated in the contracts. We will now address this together with our industry partners from across Germany. Timeline delivery is a key factor for us here,” he added.

The MEKO® A-200 DEU is based on TKMS’s established MEKO family of surface combatants and incorporates a scalable and cost-efficient design approach. According to the company, significant preparatory work has already been undertaken in recent months, laying the foundation for the rapid implementation of the construction programme once the contract is formally concluded.

The new frigates are expected to significantly reinforce the German Navy’s surface fleet, with particular emphasis on anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Their introduction will provide additional capabilities for the Navy’s core missions and strengthen Germany’s contribution to integrated national and NATO maritime operations.

The programme also carries considerable significance for Germany’s domestic naval shipbuilding and defence-industrial base. Construction of the vessels will involve industrial partners from across Germany, supporting national expertise and production capacity in the maritime defence sector.

“The decision to select the MEKO® A-200 DEU also sends an important signal to the maritime security and defense industry in Germany and underscores the importance of strong maritime capabilities for national and alliance defense,” Burkhard stated.

With parliamentary budget approval now secured, the programme can proceed toward formal contract signature and construction. The option for additional MEKO® A-200 DEU frigates could further expand the programme, potentially making the new class an increasingly important component of Germany’s future surface fleet.

The planned entry into service of the first vessel from 2029 will provide the German Navy with additional modern combat capability at a time when Germany is placing renewed emphasis on maritime readiness, anti-submarine warfare and its contribution to NATO’s collective defence.
