Destinus Accelerates RUTA Block 3 Development Program with Rheinmetall to Strengthen Europe’s Long-Range Strike Capabilities

Destinus has announced the accelerated launch of the RUTA Block 3 development program, a major step forward in Europe’s efforts to establish a sovereign, industrial-scale long-range precision strike capability. Designed for ranges of up to 2,000 kilometres, the new system will build upon the operationally validated RUTA family and is expected to begin flight testing in 2027.

The announcement reflects a broader shift in European defence planning, where the focus is increasingly moving beyond the acquisition of advanced weapons toward the ability to manufacture, replenish, and sustain them during prolonged high-intensity conflicts. Destinus aims to position the RUTA family as a scalable and cost-effective solution capable of meeting these emerging operational requirements.

RUTA Block 3 follows the development of earlier variants within the family. RUTA Block 1 is already in serial production in the Netherlands, while RUTA Block 2, developed with support from Ukraine’s Brave1 innovation platform, is currently undergoing flight testing in Ukraine and is expected to enter production ramp-up during 2026. The new Block 3 variant will significantly extend the system’s operational reach while maintaining the same European design authority, industrial sovereignty, and containerized deployment philosophy.

The program is being organized around three key European industrial hubs. In the Netherlands, Destinus will continue to serve as the engineering and design authority while maintaining its role as the primary production center for the RUTA family. Ukraine will contribute both to development activities and operational testing, while also serving as a manufacturing center for critical components. In Germany, the planned Rheinmetall Destinus Strike Systems joint venture will provide additional manufacturing capacity, qualification activities, and final integration services for the Bundeswehr and other European institutional customers.

Production activities at Rheinmetall’s facility in Unterlüß are expected to begin with RUTA Block 1 and Block 2 systems during the 2026–2027 timeframe. As the Block 3 program progresses through testing and qualification phases, it is expected to be integrated into the same industrial production framework, further expanding European manufacturing capacity.

According to Destinus Chief Executive Officer Mikhail Kokorich, Europe has entered a new era in which the decisive factor is no longer simply possessing precision-guided weapons, but maintaining the ability to produce and replenish them at industrial scale. He emphasized that RUTA Block 3 has been designed specifically around this requirement, combining sovereign European architecture with distributed production and the ability to rapidly scale manufacturing across allied nations.

Rheinmetall AG Chief Executive Officer Armin Papperger highlighted the growing importance of deep precision-strike capabilities as a key element of modern deterrence. He noted that the ability to accurately engage strategically important targets at long range contributes significantly to national and allied security. Papperger also confirmed Rheinmetall’s intention to establish the joint venture with Destinus before the end of the year and expressed confidence that the first missile systems could be produced at Unterlüß before the end of 2026.

Technically, RUTA Block 3 is planned to feature a 250-kilogram-class warhead and will be powered by the new Destinus T220 turbojet engine, currently under development. The system is intended to operate in contested environments through the use of advanced autonomous navigation capabilities designed to function in GNSS-degraded conditions. Additional terminal sensing and guidance technologies are also under development.

The missile will employ a standard ISO containerized launch architecture, allowing deployment from land-based installations, maritime platforms, and fixed operational sites. Drawing heavily on lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, the system is being developed under a fully European design, production, and export-control framework, with all activities subject to applicable national and European regulations and governmental approvals.
