Greek Patriot Systems Intercept Iranian Ballistic Missiles in Saudi Arabia
Greek-operated Patriot air defence systems deployed in Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting critical energy infrastructure, according to sources from the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence.
The incident occurred following an alert indicating an incoming aerial threat, prompting the activation of the Greek Patriot battery under the Hellenic Air Force air defence unit asssigned in Saudi Arabia folloing a bilateral defence cooperation agreement. Two interceptor missiles were launched, successfully neutralising the incoming threats, which were reportedly aimed at oil refinery facilities in the city of Yanbu.
The engagement took place within the frame of Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept, through which Greece contributes to strengthening Saudi Arabia’s air and missile defence architecture.
Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, confirmed the interception, highlighting both the operational effectiveness and strategic significance of the deployment.
“Today, the Greek Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia intercepted two ballistic missiles originating from Iran and targeting refinery infrastructure. This demonstrates the high operational readiness and combat capability of our forces,” Dendias stated.
He further underlined the broader geopolitical and economic implications of the mission, noting that the protection of energy infrastructure plays a critical role in stabilising global markets.
“The safeguarding of oil production facilities is directly linked to maintaining stable energy prices, which in turn affects the standard of living of citizens in Greece, Europe, and globally,” he added.
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis clarified that the operation constitutes a purely defensive action, stressing that Greece is not directly involved in hostilities.
The deployment of the Greek Patriot system in Saudi Arabia has been widely regarded as a key contribution to regional security, while also enhancing Greece’s role within international defence cooperation frameworks.
The successful interception underscores both the operational experience gained by Greek forces abroad and the growing importance of integrated air and missile defence systems in addressing modern security threats.
